When it's time to have a family photo taken. The two questions I get asked the most are:

"What do we wear?", and "Where should we go to have the photograph taken?"

First decide whether to wear Sunday best, or casual. Jeans are popular, but with so many different shades these days make sure that you don't have really light paired with really dark. Keep the tone similar. Muted tones, pastels, shades of blue, and black with blue jeans are all popular. Don't worry about matching exactly.

Many people like a business casual look with khaki's. You can do fall tones, white shirts, shades of blue, green, red, and white, or classic black with khaki pants.

For a while it was very popular to have everyone in matching outfits head to toe. Remember when everyone had denim shirts with nearly the same shade of blue jeans?

In today's economy, especially, think about colors that go together. For ideas of what colors may coordinate together, go to any paint store.

If you can't find the right shade of an item, I can always photoshop. In the family photo below can you tell who accidently wore blue? (I hope not, since I changed it to black)

This formal family portrait was taken on a cloudy day, making the greens much more saturated and beautiful.

What time of day is best for portraits? I like to starting a few hours before sundown...which in November means about 4:00, and in June about 7:00.

Want fall leaves? The leaves peak anywhere from mid September to mid October. There is about a two week window when things look really good. If you want color earlier head up to the mountains.

Studio shots are always timeless. The only drawback is that my studio is very tiny. This shot is an example of color coordinated clothing. While the boys are wearing matching shirts, the girls all have something different on.

This is my own family again. We took this photo in the vacant field next to my home. We wore my favorite shade of blue, which compliments the yellow field. A warming filter was added in Photoshop.

This portrait was taken in Mantua in a beautiful feild of poppies. There is about a two week window in the early summer when the flowers look their best.
