It's no surprise that some children LOVE to have their photo taken and others run away screaming. It's what gives us all our own little personalities. Here are some tips to make the sitting more comfortable for them (and you as well)

Make sure that they know what is going on and what is expected of them.

Make sure they are not hungry AT ALL. (even teenagers) A promise of going out to eat won't help most kids if their stomachs are completely empty. Even if they ate a little snack before the session and got a stain, most stains can be photoshopped out.

For younger children bring a favorite small toy or stuffed animal. Decide if it is something that you want in the photo or if it is small enough to be photoshopped out. Many times a favorite toy that makes noise that I can hold will make them look and smile.

Remember to make it a fun experience for them. Children have an uncanny knack of sensing when you are uptight, and nervous about their behavior. Many times it just makes them want to misbehave as a way to control the situation. Do not threaten. Just let them relax, have an enjoyable time, and I'll do the rest.

If you are going to bribe: remember that the younger the child, the more immediate the gratification needs to be.

Newborns and young babies are so tiny and adorable. Just don't expect smiles at this age. These sessions are time consuming, so plan on staying at least two hours. I try to do some awake and some asleep.Don't forget to capture special events like blessing/christening.

When your baby is a few 4-7 months old he/she should be able to hold up their head and gaze at the camera. This shot was enhanced in photoshop, although she really does look like an angel!

This adorable photo I took of my daughter took rounding up bears from everyone I knew.Babies that can sit up well BUT NOT CRAWL YET are perfect for a photo session. They are happy to sit and stay and be entertained.
Don't forget to bring a change of clothes...SO CUTE! Toddlers have so much energy. Sometimes giving them something to do or hold on to keeps them in front of the camera.

A photo session for a young teenager can be a time for self expression.

Teenagers are usually cooperative for the camera, although sometimes it is hard to get a selfconcious teen with braces to smile.
